The AIO Software Development Programme

Introduction

The programme was conceived arising from the various management and computerisation seminars AIO has been organising for its members over the years that showed serious difficiencies of IT capability in the African insurance industry. It was noted that available software was inadequate and expensive for a large number of AIO member companies. The AIO Secretariat embarked upon the above programme in collaboration with UNCTAD and a number of African and international Insurers and reinsurers. The software currently covers all non-life (general) insurance classes.

The Programme

The software covers 35 classes of insurance arranged into 10 groups. Each class is divided on functional lines into setup, underwriting, claims, reinsurance and accounts. Each functional division produces detailed reports that may be modified by the user, but all standard reports generally required by insurance companies have been pre-defined. Each of the 35 classes of insurance can be operated independently by big companies that have sufficient staff and portfolio or combined into various groups for small companies with fewer staff and resources. The basic programme structure and format does not change from class to class; and changes or peculiarities are highlighted for each class of business. Input, processing and output formats are identical for all classes. Thus programmers and users will not waste time and resources mastering the programme. The detailed technical document will automatically serve as a reference manual for insurance companies buying the software.

Technical basis

The software is being built using Visual C++ and Visual Basic 6 and MS-SQL server 7.0, and is fully integrated with an SQL based accounting application, the preferred choice being Microsoft Dynamics, a windows based software currently used by AIO.
